Tech Advisory: Oracle Database 12c End of Support

Extended support for Oracle Database version 12c Release.2 will officially end on March 31, 2022.

What this means realistically to the customer is that, while there may still be limited error correction for high-severity bugs, no more quarterly patches will be made available. This, in turn, means no further known vulnerabilities will be addressed for that version.

Oracle offers what is called Sustaining Support, which still provides technical support, and effectively allows licensing support to not lapse during the time that it would take the customer to upgrade to version 19c. However, for most cases, this effectively doubles the cost over what the Extended support had been.

Moser encourages all current or prospective customers to strongly consider either upgrading to, or initially implementing, version 19c. 19c is a more stable, long-term release than its 18c predecessor, and is therefore covered under the standard Premier support until April 2024, with Extended support lasting until April 2027.

While there is currently a version 21c release available, much like 18c it is not a long-term release, and Moser would recommend staying with 19c for the time being.
