Two Sides to Every Mic

Tony is currently one of the most active speakers in the world of SQL Server. It did not start that way.

Knowledge Built Over Time

Tony began working with SQL Server in 1999. He has worked with SQL Server 7.0 through SQL Server 2025 and multiple Azure options. His knowledge has come from learning in the classroom and at events like SQL Saturday, Summit, Day of Data and local user groups. Working as a DBA, developer and manager in various industries and companies of all sizes built his experience. Tony has used his education and experience to develop an extremely successful career as a consultant helping many clients.

Listening From the Audience

Listening to presentations was also critical to Tony’s development as a DBA and future speaker. Attending various events allowed Tony to watch and learn about SQL Server and about being a speaker. Consultants must be knowledgeable, intelligent, organized, critical thinkers, able to communicate well and very good listeners. We need to hear and understand many pieces of information at one time.

Strong listening skills allow your time in front of the mic to benefit not only your knowledge about the topic but also about how to speak. Ask yourself:

  • What in this presentation works for you?

  • What does not work?

  • What do you like, and what do you not?

Stepping Up to the Mic

Tony began speaking in 2023 and immediately applied what he learned. It took a bit of time to develop the confidence he has now and the opportunities to speak. After speaking four times for three consecutive years, he became an overnight success with ten speaking engagements in 2026 alone.

The Mic Has Two Sides and Tony Embraces Both

Learning happens on both sides of the mic along with giving back to the community. Delivering quality presentations helps build knowledge and our community. If you want to learn more and get more involved, check out some of those local events.
